But worldwide, there are over three million women living with Parkinson’s, though the number is likely much greater due to cases being undiagnosed or diagnosed later than men. Key findings on women and Parkinson’s Women experience Parkinson’s symptoms and respond to medications differently than men, they experience more barriers to care, treatment and support, and are underrepresented in research. Research suggests that motor symptoms may emerge later in women, with tremors being a common first symptom. However, research also suggests that women often experience faster disease progression than men According to US data, women living with Parkinson’s are accessing medical care less for their condition in comparison to men. They are also less likely to be cared for by a neurologist or movement disorder specialist. Women living with Parkinson’s face larger hurdles to get an accurate diagnosis, and receive a diagnosis less often than men. Women living with Parkinson’s report significantly less social support than men and more psychological distress. Women living with Parkinson’s are more likely to downplay their symptoms. During pregnancy and postpartum, Parkinson’s symptoms worsen. These symptoms can include dizziness, mood changes, and constipation.
