At this giving time of year, my heart fills with thoughts of my Dad, a man who embodied kindness and generosity even in the face of Parkinson’s. Supporting Parkinson Canada has become my way of honoring his memory and ensuring others can benefit from the same compassionate community that supported our family.
But before I share more about my Dad, I want to let you know that the deadline for securing your 2024 charitable tax receipt is just around the corner—midnight on December 31. Plus, this year, your gift can go twice as far. Thanks to a generous bequest from the late Jeanne Olliver, every dollar donated will be matched until the end of the year while matching funds last.
A Bittersweet Memory
One of my most vivid memories is of my four-year-old son extending his tiny hand to help my Dad up from his chair. It was a moment that was as beautiful as it was heartbreaking—a perfect reflection of the journey our family shared.
Parkinson’s may have changed many aspects of my Dad’s life, but it never dimmed his spirit. He remained a man who believed in connection and kindness, always looking for ways to uplift others, even when facing his own challenges.
Finding Strength in Community
Every week, I drove my Dad to his Parkinson Canada support group. Those meetings were a lifeline for him. They offered understanding, camaraderie, and a sense of purpose. As time went on, my Dad began encouraging others who were newly diagnosed, finding joy in helping them navigate the road ahead.
My Mom also found solace in her own support group for care partners. There, she made friends, shared her feelings openly, and learned tools to help Dad maintain independence. These resources, made possible by donors like you, were transformative for our family.
The Power of Family
Parkinson’s brought many challenges, but it also strengthened our bond as a family. While we couldn’t change my Dad’s diagnosis, we could redefine how we lived with it. One of the most positive experiences for us was participating in the Parkinson Canada SuperWalk. It became a way to show Dad our love and support while contributing to the broader Parkinson’s community.
Honoring a Legacy
There was so much more to my Dad than Parkinson’s. He was active and adventurous—a lover of tennis, running, swimming, and the great outdoors.
Both my parents chose to leave a gift to Parkinson Canada in their wills, ensuring their legacy of generosity lives on. For our family, continuing to support this organization is a meaningful way to pay tribute to them.
Your Gift Makes a Difference
As the December 31 tax deadline approaches, I hope you’ll join me in making a difference. By donating now, your gift will be matched for double the impact, helping to create valuable resources and connections for families like mine.
Thank you for being part of this incredible community. Your generosity brings hope and strength to those living with Parkinson’s, their care partners, and their loved ones.
Sincerely,
Caroline Munshaw
