Fundraising Your Way: Walter’s Inspiring Journey with Art

Posted: · Last updated:

Fundraising Your Way is a Parkinson Canada program, empowering individuals to leverage their unique skills, passions and stories to fundraise for Parkinson’s disease – be it research, program support, or advocacy. The beauty of this initiative lies in its flexibility and personal touch; it allows everyone to contribute in their own special way, utilizing their individual talents, hobbies, and passions to make a meaningful impact.

One such inspirational story is that of Walter Fernandes, whose journey intertwines personal challenge with altruistic triumph. Diagnosed with Parkinson’s in Nov. 2016, Walter was faced with a daunting prospect. Over the following years, the side effects of medication and the pandemic did not help to slow progression. It also affected his career, and even more so, his sense of self. The fear of disability loomed large in his mind.

However, Walter’s narrative is not one of surrender, but of resilience and creativity. In 2023, he embraced a new resolve to combat his condition. His weapon of choice? Art therapy. Despite not having engaged in painting since his high school days, Walter rekindled his relationship with the brush, embarking on a therapeutic and artistic journey. Painting became a daily ritual, an outlet for expression and a way to confront his condition head-on. Over the last eight months, his practice has generated hundreds of new paintings.

Recognizing the potential in his newfound passion, Walter turned to Fundraising Parkinson charities. He has begun selling his artwork, dedicating a large part of all proceeds to Parkinson Canada. This initiative not only provides financial support to the organization but also served as a beacon of hope and inspiration to others battling Parkinson’s. Walter’s story is a testament to the power of art in healing and the impact of personal endeavors in philanthropy, made possible by programs such as Fundraising Your Way.

The transformation in Walter’s life has been profound. Engaging in art and giving back through Fundraising Your Way significantly improved his mental health and outlook on life. It offered him a sense of purpose and a motivation to continue improving, despite the challenges posed by Parkinson’s.

Walter’s journey exemplifies how personal talents and passions can be harnessed for a greater cause. It’s a powerful reminder that in the fight against Parkinson’s, everyone has something valuable to contribute, and these individual efforts collectively make a substantial impact.
