BlogFinding connections with Parkinson’s Finding connections with Parkinson’s Posted Date : Feb 9, 2026 The formation of strong social bonds and human connections is valuable for everyone, especially for people living with Parkinson’s. Whether friendships, romantic connection or family, these relationships anchor our lives, bring us joy and make us feel secure. For people with Parkinson’s, a strong social support network is crucial to living well and to support mental health – one of the most overlooked areas of life with Parkinson’s. Stigma and fear of judgment can often cause people with Parkinson’s to retreat from their community, but it’s important to remember that you are still you. Parkinson’s is one facet of your life, but by staying connected to your interests, friends, family and community, you can still feel like yourself. Where should I start? First, think about the type of connections you’re looking to build. Below we’ve included some general tips, stories, and links to resources that will help you build the connections you desire. Go at your own pace: You don’t owe anyone your full story right away. When you feel comfortable, sharing a little about Parkinson’s can help others understand you better and reduce misunderstandings. Let relationships grow naturally. Take things step-by-step and focus on what feels comfortable for you. You’re not your Parkinson’s: Remember that connection is about the whole person. Parkinson’s is one part of your life, not your identity. The people who matter most will want to know you: your interests, humour, values, and experiences. Focus on connection, not perfection: Whether looking for romance or friendship, don’t try to be someone else. The right person will value honesty, openness, and connection. Stay engaged in activities that bring you joy: Shared interests are often the easiest way to build friendships and community. Whether it’s a walking group, book club, art class, or local Parkinson’s community program, these spaces can create natural opportunities for connection. Give yourself grace: Building connection takes courage. Some days will feel easier than others. Every small step toward reaching out is meaningful.
