In 2017, Ian was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, and since then, his life has been an ongoing journey of adjustment, strength, and community. Though it took two years for an official diagnosis, travelling five hours to Halifax for appointments, Ian remained patient and focused on moving forward. Now, as he waits for Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), he reflects on how far he’s come.

“I’m not ready for DBS yet, but I know when the time comes, I’ll be ready,” Ian says. His approach to Parkinson’s is calm and thoughtful—taking things one step at a time and learning to slow down.

Support, Exercise, and Purpose: Key to Ian’s Resilience

Ian credits his slow progression with Parkinson’s to his commitment to regular exercise, a strong support network, and staying focused on managing his symptoms. He recognizes the vital role his wife, Wendy, plays in supporting him through every step of the journey.

“We take it day by day,” Wendy says. “It’s about staying positive and making sure Ian still feels useful and has a purpose.” Their family and close-knit community have been crucial to their well-being, with Ian’s sons, his brother and sister, and Wendy’s parents always ready to help in any way they can.

At the gym, Ian has also found an exercise “family” that gives him both physical strength and social connections—furthering his sense of belonging and purpose. In his role as Vice President of the Parkinson Society of Cape Breton, he connects newly diagnosed individuals to the Parkinson’s community, offering them a lifeline and support just as he has found.

A Motto for Life: “I Never Give In or Give Up”

Through it all, Ian has adopted a powerful motto: “I never give in or give up.” This mindset has kept him moving forward, staying active, and embracing new opportunities—whether it’s travelling, staying engaged in the Parkinson’s community, or helping others who face similar challenges.

Ian and Wendy’s story is one of unwavering love, resilience, and the belief that no matter the obstacles, the journey is always worth it. They remind us all that with a strong support system and a positive attitude, there’s nothing we can’t face together.
