ResearchApply for funding Apply for funding Empowering research with funding that fuels breakthroughs today and tomorrow NEW! Annual Research Competition Bring your research ideas to life: apply for the 2026 Research Grant Competition! The Parkinson Canada Research Program supports promising researchers as they advance new ways to understand and diagnose Parkinson’s, develop treatments and care approaches, and improve quality of life for those affected. Applications are open to researchers and trainees at all career stages, including clinical fellows and clinician-scientists. Beginning this year, Parkinson Canada is designating a Research Priority Area for work focused on the health and well-being of women with Parkinson’s. This focus recognizes that women are uniquely impacted by Parkinson’s due to biological, social, and health care factors that remain underexplored in research currently. For details, please see the relevant RFAs for each grant type. Our funding can accelerate your research and help enhance the lives of people living with Parkinson’s. The deadline to apply is November 3, 2025. In the 2025 Research Competition, we are asking all applicants to complete a self-identification questionnaire, as a first step to better understand the demographics of our applicant pool and of our grant recipients. We are complying with the highest standards of privacy and security to ensure that this deeply personal information is collected and stored in a secure manner. Our self-identification questionnaire closely mirrors the form used by federal funding agencies (E.g. CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC), and covers the same demographic dimensions. We are asking that all applicants to our research competition complete the questionnaire, but an applicant can choose the option “I prefer not to answer” for any question where they don’t feel comfortable sharing information. The information from these self-identification questionnaires will only be accessed and reviewed after all applications have been fully reviewed and funding recommendations are completed, to ensure that this information will not be used to make any funding decisions. This personal information will only be reviewed by 1-2 staff members who have been trained in EDIJ principles. All collected answers will be transferred into a de-identified aggregated format for internal review of our grant programs and to identify any major gaps where we are not reaching or attracting research applicants from historically underrepresented groups. We also promise that any data that we share with the public or key stakeholders from these findings will be in this de-identified aggregated format to protect the identity of individuals who have shared their personal information with us. Funding opportunities 1 Kanta Marwah Research Innovation Fund (KMRIF) Parkinson Canada remains actively engaged in research activities and programs that foster collaboration, strengthen partnerships, and build capacity for quality research in Canada. In recognition that there is a growing need for funding that can be responsive to the rapid pace of Parkinson’s research around the world, Parkinson Canada has established the Kanta Marwah Research Innovation Fund (KMRIF). The KMRIF is complimentary to Parkinson Canada’s existing grant programs, with the goal of funding research projects and initiatives that will ultimately improve the lives of people with Parkinson’s. The Pilot Project Grant program (link) continues to be Parkinson Canada’s primary funding opportunity to support early-stage research projects. Whereas the KMRIF aims to be a complimentary funding opportunity to: Enhance large multi-center or interdisciplinary research projects by adding a new Parkinson’s Disease study arm, or expansion to include Canadian participation in a global project. (Average budget – $40,000 – $80,000) Catalyze new ideas and approaches for Parkinson’s research and care by funding collaborative forums for knowledge exchange and consensus-building activities within research that bring together world leaders in Parkinson’s. (Average budget – $5,000 – $15,000) Supporting preclinical or clinical development of translational research projects to help bridge gaps needed to bring novel therapies or diagnostic technologies to the clinic. (Average budget – $40,000 – $80,000) Proposals for KMRIF funding will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and is contingent on the availability of funds. C-OPN was launched in 2018 with founding financial support from Parkinson Canada and Brain Canada. C-OPN has to-date recruited 2,318 participants from 11 different sites across Canada. The C-OPN database and biobank includes demographic information, epidemiological and clinical information (including results from clinical assessment tools), neuroimaging data and biobank samples (including genotyping data from DNA samples). For a more detailed breakdown of the C-OPN research database please see here. We invite researchers and clinicians across Canada to submit proposals that analyze C-OPN’s de-identified participant data to generate new insights into Parkinson’s diagnosis, progression, and care. Up to 4 grants of up to $50,000 each will be funded for one-year projects. To help catalyze the involvement of PaP in research, we are launching a new grant program to support activities and initiatives that meaningfully embed the voices and experiences of PaP within Parkinson’s research. These may include, but are not limited to, workshops or focus groups to involve PaP in study design, or dissemination events to share the latest research findings with PaP: Workshops or focus groups to collect valuable feedback and insights from PaP, that will help to inform the design and conduct of research programs. Public research days, university tours, or public lectures that enable knowledge sharing and open dialogues between Parkinson’s researchers and the general public (including PaP). Development of educational materials (print, online, or video content) for PaP about Parkinson’s research or for the healthcare community (e.g., primary care physicians, allied health professionals) to improve care delivery for PaP.
