Dr.  Antonio P. Strafella

Dr. Antonio P. Strafella is the Krembil-Rossy chair in molecular imaging of neurodegenerative diseases and professor in the department of medicine (division of neurology) at the Toronto Western Hospital, University Health Network (UHN), University of Toronto (UofT). He is a movement disorder neurologist in the Edmond J. Safra Program in Parkinson’s Disease and Morton & Gloria Shulman Movement Disorders Clinic at the Toronto Western Hospital, UHN.

Dr. Strafella is the chair of research for the division of neurology at the UofT and a senior scientist at the Krembil Brain Institute (KBI) at UHN, and the Brain Health Imaging Centre at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). He is a faculty member of the Institute of Medical Science (IMS) at UofT. 

On the national front, Dr. Strafella is a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS) and currently serves on its governance and finance board. He also serves on the advisory board of the CIHR-Institute of Neuroscience, Mental Health and Addiction (INMHA), and the board of directors at Parkinson Canada.  

Internationally, Dr. Strafella is the chair of the Neuroimaging Task Force endorsed by the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society (MDS). He is involved in several other commitments with the MDS, World Federation of Neurology, and over the years, has been invited to participate in panels for various funding agencies.  

The focus of his research is on Parkinson’s and atypical parkinsonism using advanced neuroimaging technology and novel PET radio-ligands. He is using several PET tracers and novel radio-ligands combined with MRI techniques to investigate the pathophysiology of motor, cognitive, and behavioural symptoms in Parkinson’s and atypical parkinsonism.

Strafella est titulaire de la chaire Krembil-Rossy d’imagerie moléculaire des maladies neurodégénératives et professeur au département de médecine (division de neurologie) du Toronto Western Hospital, University Health Network (UHN), Université de Toronto (UofT). Il est neurologue spécialisé dans les troubles du mouvement au sein du Edmond J. Safra Program in Parkinson’s Disease et de la Morton & Gloria Shulman Movement Disorders Clinic au Toronto Western Hospital, UHN.

Le Dr Strafella est titulaire de la chaire de recherche de la division de neurologie de l’UofT et chercheur principal au Krembil Brain Institute (KBI) de l’UHN et au Brain Health Imaging Centre du Centre de toxicomanie et de santé mentale (CAMH). Il est membre de la faculté de l’Institut des sciences médicales (IMS) de l’Université de Toronto.

Sur le plan national, le Dr Strafella est membre de l’Académie canadienne des sciences de la santé (ACSS) et siège actuellement à son conseil de gouvernance et de financement. Il siège également au conseil consultatif de l’Institut des neurosciences, de la santé mentale et des toxicomanies (INSMT) des IRSC et au conseil d’administration de Parkinson Canada.

Au niveau international, le Dr Strafella préside le groupe de travail sur la neuroimagerie approuvé par la Société internationale de la maladie de Parkinson et des troubles du mouvement (MDS). Il participe à plusieurs autres engagements avec la MDS et la Fédération mondiale de neurologie et, au fil des ans, a été invité à participer à des groupes d’experts pour divers organismes de financement.

Ses recherches sont axées sur la maladie de Parkinson et le parkinsonisme atypique et font appel à des technologies de neuro-imagerie avancées et à de nouveaux radio-ligands pour la TEP. Il utilise plusieurs traceurs TEP et de nouveaux radio-ligands combinés à des techniques d’IRM pour étudier la physiopathologie des symptômes moteurs, cognitifs et comportementaux de la maladie de Parkinson et du parkinsonisme atypique.
