Posted Date : May 15, 2018 Did you know that May is officially Leave a Legacy month? Leave a Legacy is a national, community-based, public-awareness campaign of the Canadian Association of Gift Planners (CAGP). This campaign encourages Canadians from all walks of life to consider leaving a gift in their Will, or another type of planned giving vehicle, to a charitable organization of their choice. Any individual can plan a legacy gift, regardless of current assets or income. Legacy giving provides you with the opportunity to support a charity or cause you believe in, often in a way that you might not be able to accomplish during your lifetime. What can you do to leave a legacy gift? Prepare a Will. Leave a gift in your Will for the charitable organization that is making a difference in your life or the life of someone close to you. You can choose to leave a specific dollar amount or a percentage of your assets. Purchase a new life insurance policy naming a charitable organization as the beneficiary or name a charitable organization as the beneficiary of an existing life insurance policy. Name a charitable organization as a beneficiary of your Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) or Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF) or pension plan. Encourage family and friends to leave gifts in their Will to a charitable organization. Ask your financial or estate planning advisor to include charitable giving as part of your overall financial plan. Consult the appropriate professional advisors to ensure the type of gift maximizes the advantages both to you and to the charitable organization.
