{"id":35474,"date":"2022-02-02T10:31:11","date_gmt":"2022-02-02T15:31:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.parkinson.ca\/?post_type=profile&#038;p=35474"},"modified":"2025-02-28T21:28:50","modified_gmt":"2025-02-28T21:28:50","slug":"dr-martin-mckeown","status":"publish","type":"profile","link":"https:\/\/www.parkinson.ca\/fr\/profile\/dr-martin-mckeown\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Martin McKeown"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><abbr title=\"Doctor\">Dr.<\/abbr> Martin McKeown is the <abbr title=\"Pacific Parkinson's Research Institute\">PPRI<\/abbr>\/<abbr title=\"University of British Columbia\">UBC<\/abbr> chair in Parkinson&rsquo;s Research, director at the Pacific Parkinson&rsquo;s Research Centre (PPRC), professor in the department of medicine, and adjunct professor in the department of electrical and computer engineering at the University of British Columbia.\u202fThe PPRC is deemed an International Centre of Excellence by the National Parkinson&rsquo;s Foundation (US-NPF).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He did his engineering physics, medicine, and neurology training at McMaster, University of Toronto, and Western University, respectively. He did a three-year research fellowship at the Computational Neurobiology Laboratory at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in San Diego before being hired as an assistant professor of medicine and biomedical engineering at Duke University. He was recruited to <abbr title=\"University of British Columbia\">UBC<\/abbr> in <time datetime=\"2003\">2003<\/time>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><abbr title=\"Doctor\">Dr.<\/abbr> McKeown has been responsible for a variety of peer-reviewed research projects funded through the National Institute of Health (US-NIH), US-NPF, Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), International Association of Translational Neuroscience, and Whitaker Foundation. He was a member of the Neuroscience A (NSA) Canadian CIHR Scientific peer review committee, as well as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Parkinson&rsquo;s Society of Canada. He is currently the medical advisor to the Parkinson&rsquo;s Society of B.C. <abbr title=\"Doctor\">Dr.<\/abbr> McKeown has authored over 200 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His interests include examining novel treatments for Parkinson&rsquo;s and exploring how engineering methods can be used to enrich the lives of people with Parkinson&rsquo;s. In addition to seeing patients, <abbr title=\"Doctor\">Dr.<\/abbr> McKeown supervises graduate students in neuroscience and engineering, and trains the next generation of doctors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer is-style-responsive-xsmall\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer is-style-responsive-xsmall\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Le Dr Martin McKeown est titulaire de la chaire PPRI\/UBC de recherche sur la maladie de Parkinson, directeur du Pacific Parkinson&rsquo;s Research Centre (PPRC), professeur au d\u00e9partement de m\u00e9decine et professeur adjoint au d\u00e9partement d&rsquo;ing\u00e9nierie \u00e9lectrique et informatique de l&rsquo;universit\u00e9 de Colombie-Britannique.\u202fLe PPRC est consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme un centre international d&rsquo;excellence par la National Parkinson&rsquo;s Foundation (US-NPF).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Il a suivi sa formation en g\u00e9nie physique, en m\u00e9decine et en neurologie \u00e0 McMaster, \u00e0 l&rsquo;universit\u00e9 de Toronto et \u00e0 l&rsquo;universit\u00e9 Western, respectivement. Il a effectu\u00e9 un stage de recherche de trois ans au laboratoire de neurobiologie computationnelle du Salk Institute for Biological Studies de San Diego avant d&rsquo;\u00eatre engag\u00e9 comme professeur adjoint de m\u00e9decine et d&rsquo;ing\u00e9nierie biom\u00e9dicale \u00e0 l&rsquo;universit\u00e9 Duke. Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 recrut\u00e9 par l&rsquo;UBC en 2003.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le Dr McKeown a \u00e9t\u00e9 responsable de divers projets de recherche \u00e9valu\u00e9s par les pairs et financ\u00e9s par le National Institute of Health (US-NIH), l&rsquo;US-NPF, la Fondation canadienne pour l&rsquo;innovation (FCI), le Conseil de recherches en sciences naturelles et en g\u00e9nie du Canada (CRSNG), les Instituts de recherche en sant\u00e9 du Canada (IRSC), l&rsquo;International Association of Translational Neuroscience et la Whitaker Foundation. Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 membre du comit\u00e9 d&rsquo;examen scientifique par les pairs de Neuroscience A (NSA) des IRSC canadiens, ainsi que membre du conseil consultatif scientifique de la Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Parkinson du Canada. Il est actuellement conseiller m\u00e9dical de la Parkinson&rsquo;s Society of B.C. Le Dr McKeown est l&rsquo;auteur de plus de 200 articles et chapitres de livres \u00e9valu\u00e9s par des pairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Il s&rsquo;int\u00e9resse notamment \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9tude de nouveaux traitements pour la maladie de Parkinson et \u00e0 la mani\u00e8re dont les m\u00e9thodes d&rsquo;ing\u00e9nierie peuvent \u00eatre utilis\u00e9es pour am\u00e9liorer la vie des personnes atteintes de la maladie de Parkinson.
