Elles transmettent les instructions de l&rsquo;ADN pour cr\u00e9er des prot\u00e9ines, et les prot\u00e9ines dirigent le fonctionnement des cellules. \u00c0 l&rsquo;universit\u00e9 de la Colombie-Britannique, Jordan Follett, chercheur postdoctoral et neuroscientifique, \u00e9tudie le complexe retromer, un complexe de tri qui pourrait communiquer l&rsquo;endroit o\u00f9 l&rsquo;ARN doit \u00eatre positionn\u00e9 dans les cellules. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une bourse de recherche fondamentale de 80 000 dollars sur deux ans financ\u00e9e par la Parkinson Society British Columbia, Follett \u00e9tudie ce qui se passe lorsque le r\u00e9seau de signalisation contr\u00f4lant ce processus est perturb\u00e9. La recherche de Follett, qui fait appel \u00e0 des mod\u00e8les de souris, examine l&rsquo;impact des g\u00e8nes mut\u00e9s au sein de ce complexe. Les cellules c\u00e9r\u00e9brales qui produisent la dopamine, substance chimique essentielle au bon fonctionnement des mouvements, sont des cellules \u00e0 haute \u00e9nergie qui ont besoin d&rsquo;ARN pour r\u00e9agir rapidement \u00e0 la production de prot\u00e9ines, en particulier si ces cellules sont stress\u00e9es par des toxines ou d&rsquo;autres menaces. Si l&rsquo;ARN est mal plac\u00e9 et ne peut pas r\u00e9agir rapidement pour produire des prot\u00e9ines dans les cellules en d\u00e9tresse, celles-ci ne peuvent pas s&rsquo;adapter aux changements. Elles deviennent vuln\u00e9rables et meurent, estime Follett. \u00ab\u00a0Il est facile d&rsquo;imaginer que si une partie de votre corps ne fait pas circuler les prot\u00e9ines du point A au point B, de nombreuses cellules sont m\u00e9contentes, en particulier les neurones\u00a0\u00bb, explique M. Follett. Des neurones m\u00e9contents pourraient alors conduire \u00e0 la maladie de Parkinson. Si Follett parvient \u00e0 prouver sa th\u00e9orie sur le r\u00f4le du complexe retromer dans la localisation de l&rsquo;ARN dans les cellules c\u00e9r\u00e9brales, cela ouvrirait une nouvelle voie pour des m\u00e9dicaments ou d&rsquo;autres th\u00e9rapies susceptibles de r\u00e9parer le processus de signalisation au sein de ces cellules, ce qui pourrait pr\u00e9venir ou arr\u00eater la progression de la maladie de Parkinson. La fascination de Follett pour la fa\u00e7on dont la maladie de Parkinson se d\u00e9veloppe dans le cerveau a commenc\u00e9 lors d&rsquo;un cours de m\u00e9decine mol\u00e9culaire \u00e0 l&rsquo;universit\u00e9 Griffith, dans le sud-est du Queensland, en Australie, son pays natal.
