World Brain Day, led by the World Federation of Neurology, is a momentous global initiative observed every July 22. With a dedicated focus on expanding awareness and improving access to healthcare for individuals with disabilities, this significant day holds the power to transform lives. This year, the theme chosen by the WFN is « Brain Health and Disability: Leave No One Behind, » a powerful call to action that resonates with Parkinson Canada’s mission of improving the lives of those affected by Parkinson’s.
Prioritizing our overall health is crucial, and it becomes equally important to focus on nurturing our brain health in our daily lives. Given the progressive nature of Parkinson’s disease, taking a few proactive steps to support and enhance brain health through simple lifestyle changes is important.
- Engage in Regular Physical Activity: Exercise is not only beneficial for your physical well-being but also for your brain. Regular physical activity enhances cognitive function and may reduce the risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s. Incorporate Parkinson friendly activities like walking, cycling, or even Dancing with Parkinson’s into your routine to keep your body and brain active.
- Follow a Brain-Boosting Diet: Taking care of your brain by providing it with a nutritious diet is essential. Include foods rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. Fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats, such as those found in fish and nuts, are all great choices. Avoid processed foods, excessive sugar, and saturated fats, as they can have negative impacts on brain health.
- Stimulate Your Mind: Your brain loves to be challenged. Participate in activities that encourage cognitive function, such as reading, solving puzzles and learning a new skill or instrument. These activities can help maintain neural connections as well as improve memory.
- Prioritize Sleep: Adequate sleep plays a crucial role in brain health. Aim for 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night by establishing a consistent sleep routine and creating a sleep-friendly environment by minimizing distractions. Read our Report on Sleep Issues and Parkinson’s.
- Support Brain Health through Parkinson Canada: By participating in events such as SuperWalk, spreading awareness, and supporting Parkinson Canada’s initiatives, you contribute to enhancing brain health for individuals with Parkinson’s and beyond.
Small lifestyle changes can go a long way in enhancing our brain health and shaping a brighter future. On World Brain Day, join Parkinson Canada to champion healthier brains and better lives for everyone.
