World Parkinson Day is April 11th. As part of Parkinson Awareness Month, Parkinson Canada is celebrating the strength and resilience of people affected by Parkinson’s. For everything that challenges you when living with Parkinson’s, you can also gain grace, perspective, strength and patience. It is still possible to live well with Parkinson’s with support and connection.
There are so many ways to get involved on April 11th and beyond:
- Parkinson Canada is hosting an event on April 11 at Yonge–Dundas Square in Toronto, from 1-3 p.m. EST. We’ll welcome partners including Dancing with Parkinson’s and Passion for Parkinson’s, who will lead a dance program and sit-to-stand challenge, respectively. Martha Johnson, formerly of Martha and the Muffins now Martha and Co., will release a song called “Slow Emotion” – written and recorded with people living with Parkinson’s. Martha herself has been living with Parkinson’s for a number of years and will be at the event to share the song and a short documentary about the making of the song. - Participate in your own Sit-to-Stand challenge as part of a global movement, dedicated to raising awareness and support for people living with Parkinson’s. Research shows that people with Parkinson’s often struggle with movements like sit-to-stand due to bradykinesia, or slowness of movement. A sit-to-stand is the transitional movement of going from a seated position to an upright standing position. By joining the Sit-to-Stand Challenge, you’ll help raise awareness of these challenges and contribute to ongoing efforts to improve treatment and support for those with Parkinson’s. Share your challenge on social media using hashtags like #standup2PD and #sit2stand.
- Join our Facebook Challenge to also provide an opportunity to contribute to Parkinson Canada’s vital programs and research initiatives. By participating in the challenge and making a donation to Parkinson Canada, you directly support and enable the us to provide essential services and resources, making a meaningful difference in the Parkinson’s community. Join the Facebook Challenge.
Challenge your friends, family, and colleagues to join you in raising awareness and support for Parkinson Canada in our mission to empower people living with Parkinson’s to live well and thrive. Together, we can make a positive impact and pave the way for a brighter future for everyone impacted by Parkinson’s.
