Leave a Legacy is a national, community-based, public-awareness campaign of the Canadian Association of Gift Planners (CAGP). This campaign encourages Canadians from all walks of life to consider leaving a gift in their Will, or another type of planned giving vehicle, to a charitable organization of their choice.

Any individual can plan a legacy gift, regardless of current assets or income. Legacy giving provides you with the opportunity to support a charity or cause you believe in, often in a way that you might not be able to accomplish during your lifetime.

What can you do to leave a legacy gift?

  • Prepare a Will.
  • Leave a gift in your Will for the charitable organization that is making a difference in your life or the life of someone close to you. You can choose to leave a specific dollar amount or a percentage of your assets.
  • Purchase a new life insurance policy naming a charitable organization as the beneficiary or name a charitable organization as the beneficiary of an existing life insurance policy.
  • Name a charitable organization as a beneficiary of your Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) or Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF) or pension plan.
  • Encourage family and friends to leave gifts in their Will to a charitable organization.
  • Ask your financial or estate planning advisor to include charitable giving as part of your overall financial plan.
  • Consult the appropriate professional advisors to ensure the type of gift maximizes the advantages both to you and to the charitable organization.
