Virtual screening - "Slow Emotion: The Making Of"

Join us on for an interactive screening of Slow Emotion, an inspiring documentary by Toronto filmmaker Jason Cipparrone. Martha Johnson and Mark Gane, members of the iconic Toronto new wave band Martha and the Muffins, known for their 1980 hit “Echo Beach,” unveiled “Slow Emotion” last year, aimed at raising awareness about Parkinson’s. Having founded the band in 1977, Martha has been living with Parkinson’s for 23 years. Alongside her husband Mark, they’ve collaborated with fellow musician Fabio Dwyer, a guitarist also living with Parkinson’s, to produce “Slow Emotion.” This heartfelt project, initiated by their neurologist Dr. Alfonso Fasano, demonstrates that creativity can thrive in the face of challenges. The documentary captures the songwriting and recording process, culminating in a moving performance featuring a choir of voices from individuals with Parkinson’s. Their message, “Empathy, not sympathy,” challenges perceptions and inspires connection through art. Following the screening, join us for an engaging discussion with Martha Johnson, Mark Gane, Brian Anthony, and filmmaker Jason Cipparrone. This interactive session provides an opportunity to explore the stories behind the music and the making of the documentary. Don’t miss this chance to witness the transformative power of art and community.
