APPLICATION PROCESS
General
Does PSC fund international grants and fellowships?
Yes, international fellowships are funded in select cases; see Guidelines for details
Can I apply in French?
Parkinson Society Canada welcomes applications in both official languages.
What universities are recognized by PSC?
See ‘Approved Institutions’ in the Guidelines
Is there a budgetary allowance for institutional overhead?
No, we do not provide funding for overhead.
Can candidates apply to more than one grant category?
Yes, however, due to limited funding available for research awards, PSC will fund no more than one application by a particular applicant. Please see ‘Eligibility’
Are there any exceptions to the submission deadline?
Applications must be postmarked by the deadline date. It is the responsibility of the candidate to ensure that all documentation reaches the Society National Office in a timely fashion. The candidate should also emphasize to sponsors responsible for sending assessments to the Society Office the need for their assessments to be sent by the closing date.
Is it possible that my funding may be discontinued after one year?
Yes, although this is rare. Continuation of support for a second year is contingent upon receipt of a progress report deemed satisfactory by scientific review, as outlined in the Guidelines.
Are photocopies of transcripts acceptable?
Yes.
For project narratives in the application, does the maximum page allowance exclude or include figures and references?
The maximum page allowance excludes figures and references; these may be appended, along with other materials as specified in the RFA.
Where CVs are requested in a maximum of four pages, is this for all co-applicants or for each applicant?
CVs for each applicant should be no more than four pages long, in standard NIH biosketch format, as outlined in the Guidelines.
Grants
Can technicians’ salaries be included in operating costs?
Yes; see Guidelines for details
I am conducting research involving animals, however the research ethics board of my university will not yet have reviewed the project by the application deadline. What do I do?
Submit your application noting that the ethical review is pending, and forward the approval as soon as it is available (preferably before adjudication). If your application is approved by PSC, no funding will be released until we have received the approval.
Fellowships
The supporting letter from my sponsor(s) will not be available at the deadline for submissions. Will this make my application ineligible?
Ultimately, no, although we strongly encourage compliance with stated deadlines. Where necessary, exceptions may be explicitly arranged with our office.
Can a supervisor qualify as one of the two sponsors needed to fill out assessment forms?
Yes, providing the individual makes it clear that they would be the applicant’s supervisor and therefore have some conflict of interest in the proposal.
Can fellowship monies be used to fund attendance at conferences?
Yes, where the conference is relevant to the training.
Are there any funds available for travel?
See Guidelines
As a current awardee of PSC, will I be allowed to apply a second time as a fellow for the next competition?
Fellowships are not renewable beyond the original term.
Is it permitted to have co-supervisors for this fellowship?
Yes, you are permitted to have co-supervisors for the fellowship as long as both supervisors will be contributing.
RESPONSE PROCESS
General
Does PSC release comments or scoring from reviewers after the adjudication so that I can improve my project in future?
The Advisory Board anticipates that it will provide each applicant whose application to participate in the Program has been declined with written notice of such decision and a brief written critique of their application.
What responsibilities does an awardee have to the Society?
See Guidelines
Acceptance
Can signed contracts be faxed back?
Yes. Hard copy should follow by mail.
Can salary support for a fellow be paid directly to the fellow?
Unless the fellow is training abroad, an academic health sciences centre research office should administer the award. In the case of international fellowships, arrangements will be made on a case by case basis.
