One button at a time

by Paul E. Mazerolle

There used to be a time
I could just jump out of bed.
In just a few short minutes
I would be washed and dressed and fed.

Now I’m not so fast.
In fact, I’m very slow.
But it doesn’t really matter
as long as I get up and I go.

It’s not easy getting dressed
and I must focus my attention
when I’m putting on my shirt
I fight with each and every button.

It can be very frustrating
but I do not want to stop
until my shirt is buttoned up from
the bottom to the top.

This is how it is and
it is how my life’s defined.
I take each and every day
just one button at a time.
