Psychosocial Stream

In order to better understand the “quality of life” issues faced by people living with Parkinson’s and their care partners, Parkinson Society Canada expanded its research program to specifically include a psychosocial strand of research.

PSC has modeled its research-funding program on the CIHR to support a broad range of research streams.

The Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR) has identified four pillars of medical research:
I) Biomedical
II) Clinical
III) Health services and systems
IV) Population studies

Under the first two pillars, researchers specializing in Parkinson’s are investigating a wide spectrum of topics including:

  • The death of brain cells in Parkinson’s
  • Environmental/ gene interactions
  • Cell biology and function
  • Protein aggregation and genetic studies
  • Functional neuroimaging and cognitive deficits

Psychosocial research is located within the third and fourth pillars to:

  • Deal with the social and psychological aspects of Parkinson’s
  • Gain knowledge and understanding about how to maintain and improve the quality of life for people living with Parkinson’s

Researchers investigate:

  • Caregiving or supportive interventions
  • Behavioural or cognitive changes
  • Treatments for non-motor and motor symptoms
  • Economic impacts on families

The emphasis is on gaining insight into the experience of the person with Parkinson’s and that of the caregiver or health provider.

Findings are used to:

  • Improve support services
  • Plan advocacy strategies that influence policy decisions
Psychosocial research focuses on quality of life issues for people living with Parkinson’s. It goes beyond the physical aspects of the disease, to better understand the impact of Parkinson’s on those living with the disease every day.
