UPDATE: Genetic discrimination
On June 10, 2010, the US Food and Drug Administration sent regulatory letters to five direct-to-consumer genetic testing companies requesting that they obtain FDA approval or clearance for their tests. The companies are: 23andMe, deCODE Genetics, Illumina Inc., Navigenics and Knome.

Canadian Coalition for Genetic Fairness(WINNIPEG) February 25, 2010 — Canadian Coalition for Genetic Fairness spokespersons were on hand today to support NDP MP Judy Wasylycia-Leis as she announced she will be tabling a bill to protect Canadians against genetic discrimination.

Parkinson Society Canada has joined the Canadian Coalition for Genetic Fairness. Huntington Society Canada is spearheading this Coalition to introduce legislation to prevent genetic information from being factored into decisions impacting a person's life (e.g., employment/hiring practices, life insurance, mortgage eligibility, health and disability insurance).

We would like to hear from you if you have been denied employment, insurance coverage or benefits based on your genetics or family history in developing Parknson's disease (or a related condition). Please send your story to general.info@parkinson.ca. Confidentiality is protected and the examples will be summarized anonymously. Thank you.

Communication breakdown: what happens to nerve cells in Parkinson's disease
February 9, 2010, Montreal - A new study from The Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital - The Neuro - at McGill University is the first to discover a molecular link between Parkinson's disease and defects in the ability of nerve cells to communicate. The study, published in the prestigious journal Molecular Cell and selected as Editor's Choice in the prominent journal Science, provides new insight into the mechanisms underlying Parkinson's disease, and could lead to innovative new therapeutic strategies.
